For our first five years or so we used small filing cards like this one to
record subscriptions to PPC. This worked well, but we could see that by
about PPC 20 both sides of the cards might be full, and we had come to
believe that modern technology could streamline our operation. So we
acquired a huge dedicated word processor (a Nexos, bought just when ICL
took them over), at huge cost (over £5,000, even with a discount), and
began to keep records on it. It is still with us, eleven years later, and remains
preferable, for some purposes, to the more modern computer which now
provides a habitat for North American subscribers.
