Edited by Peter Davidson & Jane Stevenson. Transcription. Digby's famous posthumously published collection of recipes was last reprinted in 1910. In this updated edition the editors discuss the role of Digby's assistant Hartman in the compilation of the book, and compare its contents with that of a later work published by Hartman in 1682. There are extensive biographical notes on individuals named as recipe sources, as well as an inventory listing the contents of Digby's kitchen in his London home. Digby's Closet can be classified as a 'still-room book' descended from the old herbals, full of herb lore and utilizing flowers & herbs for medicinal purposes. It contains many culinary recipes as well, the most notable (and numerous) being those for the fermented honey beverages known as mead and metheglin. Although John Evelyn called Digby 'a mountebank', perhaps he should be remembered as an amateur scientist and herbalist who was gifted, but unfortunately misguided. 300 pages. Hardcover. Import.
